For Los Angeles County homes, there is no automatic winner. Copper has a long record in residential plumbing and remains a strong choice in the right conditions. PEX offers flexibility, efficient installation, and excellent value, particularly when replacing plumbing inside finished walls. The best decision comes from a clear assessment of the property, not a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Copper PEX Comparison: The Core Differences

Copper is a rigid metal pipe. It is joined with fittings, typically through soldering, press connections, or other approved methods. PEX, short for cross-linked polyethylene, is a flexible plastic tubing installed with specialized fittings and connections. Its flexibility changes how a plumber can route water lines through framing, ceilings, crawl spaces, and walls.

That difference affects the entire project. Copper often requires more cutting, fitting, and access because each direction change needs a fitting. PEX can make broad bends and run longer continuous sections, reducing the number of connections hidden behind walls.
