A shower that weakens when someone starts the dishwasher is frustrating. A sudden, house-wide trickle is different - it can point to a leak, a failing pressure-control component, or a problem at the water supply. Understanding why water pressure drops helps Los Angeles homeowners respond appropriately, protect their property, and avoid paying for a repair that treats only the symptom.
Water pressure problems are not always caused by the same issue, and the pattern matters. Does the pressure drop at one fixture or throughout the home? Is it limited to hot water? Did it happen overnight, or has it slowly worsened over months? Those details give a licensed plumber a practical starting point.
First, know the difference between pressure and flow
Homeowners often use “low water pressure” to describe any weak stream, but pressure and flow are related without being identical. Pressure is the force pushing water through the plumbing. Flow is the amount of water that actually reaches a fixture.
A clogged showerhead may produce poor flow even when the home’s water pressure is normal. A partly closed shutoff valve can also restrict flow to a single fixture. A partially closed main shutoff valve can create similar symptoms. It may have been left that way after a repair, a remodel, or water-meter work. The valve at the meter can also be involved, but homeowners should not attempt to operate utility equipment or make adjustments beyond their property without direction from the water provider.
Neighborhood demand can play a role too. If pressure is noticeably lower only at certain times of day, the municipal supply may be experiencing temporary demand changes or maintenance activity. Before assuming the issue is outside the house, compare the pressure at more than one fixture and ask whether nearby homes are experiencing the same problem.
A hidden leak can reduce water pressure
A leak does not always announce itself with water on the floor. A break in an underground water line, a leak below a slab, or a leak inside a wall can allow water to escape before it reaches fixtures. The result may be reduced pressure, an unexplained increase in water use, damp areas, warm spots on flooring, or the sound of water moving when no fixture is on.
If your water meter continues to register use after all fixtures and water-using appliances are off, there may be a leak on the home’s side of the meter. This is a useful warning sign, not a complete diagnosis. Irrigation lines, pool equipment, water treatment systems, and automatic appliances can also affect the reading.
Do not ignore a sudden pressure drop combined with wet soil, pooling water, discolored walls, a musty odor, or a sharp jump in your water bill. Turning off the home’s main water supply can limit damage while a licensed plumber evaluates the source. Leak detection should be precise, especially when the suspected line is beneath finished flooring, concrete, or landscaped areas.
Older pipes may be restricting water flow

If your home has a visible pressure gauge, note whether the reading is unusually low or fluctuates. Avoid turning regulator adjustment screws, disconnecting supply lines, or forcing old valves. Those steps can create leaks or increase pressure beyond what the plumbing system should carry.
For an immediate and severe loss of water pressure, especially with visible flooding or suspected pipe damage, shut off the main water supply if it is safe to do so and arrange prompt service.
The value of a complete diagnosis
The best repair begins by locating the restriction or pressure loss rather than guessing. A qualified plumber can test incoming and static pressure, inspect accessible valves and fixtures, evaluate the regulator, check for leaks, and determine whether aging pipes are affecting the system. That process may reveal a simple fixture repair, or it may show that a larger repipe or water-line repair is needed.
For homes undergoing renovations, additions, or ADU work, pressure concerns should be reviewed early. New fixtures and expanded plumbing demand can expose limitations in old supply piping.
